Graduate Studies at the National University of Singapore

Annual Deadline: November for August Admission / May for January Admission

NUS offers three main types of challenging graduate programmes: Doctoral (Ph.D.), Master's (by coursework or by thesis), and the Graduate Diploma. All Doctoral degree programmes at NUS are primarily research-based. They equip students with the skills required to advance knowledge, and human progress. Doctoral degrees are typically the first choice of students who seek depth of knowledge, enjoy creative problem solving, and who aspire to hold high level positions in their respective fields. To accommodate students with full-time employment, some doctoral programmes allow students to enroll on a part-time basis, with modules conducted in the evenings and, in some instances, on Saturdays. Master's degree programmes are primarily designed to prepare students for the practice of a profession (typically Master's by coursework) or to master a subject area as a precursor to doctoral training (typically Master's by research).

The Graduate Diploma is offered as a terminal qualification and provides limited professional training in a specific niche. The Graduate Diploma is often favoured by those students who seek additional exposure to an area of interest without wishing to commit themselves long-term to further studies.

Prospective graduate students should think carefully about which type of graduate programme most suits their interests and career aspirations. Increasingly, students pursuing a research-oriented career (whether in industry or academe) and/or wanting to advance quickly in their chosen career, elect to enroll in a Doctoral programme.

Programmes offered in the School of Science & Technology include degree programs in Computing, Engineering, and Sciences. Inter-disciplinary programs are also offered in Financial Engineering, Integrative Science & Engineering, Intellectual Property Management, Logistics, Management of Technology, and Systems Design & Management.

Luce Scholars Program

Launched in 1974, the Luce Scholars Program is aimed at a group of highly qualified young Americans in a variety of professional fields. It is unique among American-Asian exchanges in that it is intended for young leaders who have had limited experience of Asia and who might not otherwise have an opportunity in the normal course of their careers to come to know Asia. The Program provides stipends, language training and individualized professional placement in Asia for fifteen to eighteen young Americans each year. Candidates must be nominated by one of the participating universities and American citizens who, by September 1 of the year they enter the program, will have received at least a bachelor's degree and will not have reached their 30th birthday. Nominees should have a record of high achievement, outstanding leadership ability, and a clearly defined career interest with evidence of potential for professional accomplishment. Those who already have significant experience in Asia or Asian studies are not eligible for the Luce Scholars Program.

Rice applicants must contact Dr. Kellie Sims Butler at ksbutler@rice.edu.
