CD Broad Exchange Scholarship

Annual Deadline: Early March

The C.D. Broad is a scholarship that supports a one-year exchange between students at Trinity College, Cambridge and Rice University. It dates to the 1960s, and is the oldest study abroad scholarship at Rice. Application Materials: Candidates should consult with Dr. Butler, a study-abroad advisor and attend a Step One session before applying. Students must submit all of the following in electronic format (PDF or Word document): 1) a 4-6 page statement explaining your reasons for wishing to study in Cambridge 2) a resume 3) an unofficial transcript 4) three letters of recommendation. These materials should be sent to Kellie Sims Butler at scholars@rice.edu by March 8, 2010, preferably as a PDF file; or by campus mail to MS-200, or in person at Suite 208 RMC. While this program is open to all Rice undergraduates preference will be given to sophomores.




Churchill Scholarships

Annual Deadline: Early November

Churchill Scholarships offer American students, enrolled in one of the institutions participating in the program, the opportunity to pursue graduate studies in engineering, mathematics and the sciences at Churchill College, Cambridge. The criteria for selection of Churchill Scholars includes the following: exceptional academic achievement as indicated by course grades; scores on the GRE; capacity to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics by pursuing original, creative work at an advanced level as demonstrated by awards and prizes and letters of reference; outstanding personal character as demonstrated by leadership, activities, and social engagement. To be eligible you must be a U.S. citizen, 19-26, with a received bachelor’s degree at time enrollment abroad.




DAAD RISE Professional Internships



Annual Deadline: January 31


RISE professional - Research Internships in Science and Engineering - gives graduating seniors and graduate or PhD students in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Geology and Physics a unique opportunity to gain practical, career-building experience working in a German company for the summer. Undergraduates who are RISE alumni or former DAAD scholarship holders are also invited to apply. All participants receive stipends from DAAD to help cover living expenses.




Gates Cambridge Scholarship

Annual Deadline: Mid-October

In October 2000, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation of Seattle, Washington, USA announced a donation to the University of Cambridge of $210 million to establish the Gates Cambridge Trust. This benefaction creates in perpetuity an international scholarship programme to enable outstanding graduate students from outside the United Kingdom to study at the University of Cambridge. The Trustees are required to award scholarships on the basis of a person's intellectual ability, leadership capacity and desire to use their knowledge to contribute to society throughout the world by providing service to their communities and applying their talents and knowledge to improve the lives of others. To be eligible you cannot be a citizen of the United Kingdom and you must apply to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study: a) Research leading to the PhD degree, b) One-year post-graduate courses (e.g. MPhil, LLM, Diploma, MBA etc.), or c) 2 year MSc degree o Second Bachelor degree as an Affiliated Student o MBBChir Clinical Studies. You can apply for any field of study available at Cambridge.




George Mitchell Scholarships

Annual Deadline: Early August

The Mitchell scholarships are named to honor the former US Senate Majority Leader, a pivotal leader in the Northern Ireland peace process. Launched in 1998, the program is administered by the US-Ireland Alliance, a non-profit organization based in Washington, DC. Mitchell Scholars normally enroll in a one-year Master's programs. The Mitchell Scholarships are already considered one of America’s most prestigious fellowship programs. Three recipients in the last few years have withdrawn from the Rhodes competition and others have turned down Fulbright and Marshall scholarships to accept the Mitchell. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, ages 18 to 30, and college graduates at the time that the award is received (graduating seniors are encouraged to apply). Candidates seeking Rice's nomination must meet with Dr. Butler in the spring of their junior year or early summer prior to their senior year.




IAESTE US - Technical Internships & Short-Term Programs Abroad for Engineers

IAESTE United States is a membership organization dedicated to developing global skills in tomorrow's technical leaders through international exchange, leadership training, professional skill development, and technical education. Opportunities include paid internships abroad, short-term study abroad programs, and work permit service. Students at the sophomore, junior, senior, graduating senior, or graduate student levels are eligible to apply and international students currently attending a US university or college as a degree-seeking student are eligible as well. Internship opportunities exist in over 80 countries worldwide in the sciences, engineering, and architecture.




Leifur Eiríksson Foundation

Annual Deadline: Early December

The Leifur Eiríksson Foundation funds scholars from U.S. universities for graduate research or study at universities in Iceland, and scholars from universities in Iceland to conduct research or study at universities in the United States. Funding includes up to $25,000 in project costs, including travel to and from the research or study site.




Marshall Scholarship

Annual Deadline: Early August

The Marshall Scholarship is one of the most prestigious post-graduate scholarships. It supports 2-3 years of study at any British university. "Applications for universities other than Oxford and Cambridge will be particularly welcomed." U.S. citizen under 26 years of age with a minimum 3.7 GPA are eligible. "In appointing Scholars the selectors will look for distinction of intellect and character as evidenced both by their scholastic attainments and by their other activities and achievements. Preference will be given to candidates who combine high academic ability with the capacity to play an active part in the life of the United Kingdom university to which they go, and to those who display a potential to make a significant contribution to their own society. Selectors will also look for strong motivation and seriousness of purpose, including the presentation of a specific and realistic academic programme."




NSEP Boren Graduate Scholarship

Annual Deadline: Early January

Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. Boren Fellowships support study and research in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interest, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Fellowships enable both master's and doctoral level students representing a broad range of academic and professional disciplines to add a significant language and international dimension to their curricula. Boren Fellows study less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portugese, Russian and Swahili. Funding is available for both domestic and overseas support. The program focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. It draws on a broad definition of national security, recognizing that the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including: sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness. All applicants must demonstrate how their study programs and future goals are connected to this broad understanding of national security. To be eligible you must be a U.S. citizen at the time of application and either enrolled in or applying to a graduate degree program at an accredited U.S. college or university located within the United States. To receive the award you must provide evidence of admission and enrollment in such a program. Boren Fellows must remain enrolled in their graduate programs for the duration of the fellowship.




Rhodes Scholarship

Annual Deadline: Early August

Rhodes Scholars are elected for two or three years of study at the University of Oxford. All educational costs, such as matriculation, tuition, laboratory and certain other fees, are paid on the Scholar's behalf by the Rhodes Trust. The Rhodes Trust covers the cost of travel to and from Oxford, and upon application, may approve additional grants for research purposes or study-related travel. The selection criteria laid down in Cecil Rhodes's will are (1) literary and scholastic achievements, (2) energy to use one's talents to the full, as exemplified by fondness for and success in sports, (3) truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness, and fellowship, and (4) moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one's fellow beings.




Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships

Annual Deadline: Varies, See Website

The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. The program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to a greater understanding of their host country.




Wagoner Foreign Study Scholarship

Annual Deadline: January

The Wagoner Foreign Study Scholarship funds study abroad for Rice undergraduates, alumni, and graduate students. Competition for the Scholarship is open to Rice juniors and seniors, as well as to 2009 graduates and current graduate students. Sophomores or freshmen are eligible to apply provided they hold junior or senior standing. Foreign citizenship does not preclude eligibility. Candidates should consult with Dr. Butler, a study-abroad advisor and attend a Step One session before applying.




Watson Fellowship

Annual Deadline: Late August

The Watson is unique among major scholarships in that it has no institutional academic component — you don’t go to some university to study. Instead it requires that you be a self-starter and able to take care of yourself, and really interested in some neat independent investigations abroad. The candidate ranked highest by the Rice Committee on Scholarships and Awards for the Watson Fellowship who does not receive the award will automatically receive the Zeff Fellowship. Its value in 2008 is $25,000. To be eligible to apply you must be in your final year of your bachelor’s degree studies.




Whitaker International Scholars & Fellows Program for Biomedical Engineers

Annual Deadline: Late January

Today, biomedical engineering (BME) is a global discipline. Biomedical engineers know that, as work in the field becomes more refined, the best place to study or conduct research is not always in the U.S. Although there are currently few opportunities to go abroad to leverage international expertise, the Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program makes available just such an opportunity. Biomedical engineers can use the Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program to go overseas to help further their careers, and the field of BME. Potential overseas activities could include: Conducting research at an academic institution; Interning at a policy institute; Establishing ties between home and host institutions; Pursuing post-doctoral research. To be eligible you must have already received a bachelor’s degree prior to the start date of the grant, you cannot have received your doctorate degree by the start date of the grant, and you must have received or will receive a degree in biomedical engineering (or bioengineering), or done equivalent coursework. You must also be a currently enrolled student OR have obtained your most recent degree within three years of your proposed start date. You must also have U.S. citizenship, or be a permanent legal resident of the U.S. and have language ability to carry out the proposed project in the host country at the time of departure.




US Fulbright Program

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Fulbright is the largest U.S. international exchange program offering opportunities for students, scholars and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide. US engineering and science students are particularly underrepresented in US Fulbright applicant numbers and opportunities exist for graduating seniors, graduate students, post-doctoral students, professionals, and faculty.

Recent Rice Fulbright recipients include Jonah Shaver who received a grant to conduct post-doctoral research at the Centre de Physique Moleculaire Optique et Hertzienne of Bordeaux University in France.

Global Edge International Internship Directory


The globalEDGE International Internship Directory is a significantly updated and adapted version of the Directory of International Internships which was created by Michigan State University's International Studies and Programs under the direction of Dr. Charles Gliozzo. The original Directory was first published in 1989 and is now in its sixth edition. The Directory is a reference guide for students, faculty, staff, and administrators to help match students with international internship opportunities offered by two- and four-year colleges and universities, governmental agencies, non-profit groups, private organizations, and corporations.




Peace Corps

Since 1961, the Peace Corps has shared with the world America's most precious resource – its people. Peace Corps Volunteers serve in 74 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe, and the Middle East. Collaborating with local community members, Volunteers work in areas like education, youth outreach and community development, the environment, and information technology. Coming from all walks of life and representing the rich diversity of the American people, volunteers range in age from college students to retirees. Every Peace Corps Volunteer's experience is different. A range of opportunities for engineering and science students exist within the Peace Corps including placements in the Environment, Agriculture, Health, HIV/AIDS, and Information Technology, among many other areas of specialization. The Prince of Wales Innovation Scholarship

POWIS (Prince of Wales Innovation Scholarship) is a new £11 million initiative that is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund provided through the Welsh Assembly Government. In 2009, POWIS will fund a minimum of 20 scholarships to undertake PhD research on a full-time basis over a three year period. The successful candidates will undertake research projects developed by high growth,innovative companies in Wales and supervised by academics from partner universities. This is therefore an opportunity for students with an excellent academic background to gain experience of developing R&D within high growth technology-based firms, whilst improving their entrepreneurship and innovation skills.
